Ready To Start Your Pond Project?
Why Choose Schlicht Ponds for Pond Construction
Schlicht Ponds has been building, repairing, and dredging ponds and lakes for more than 18 years. We are Michigan’s #1 choice when it comes to new pond construction. Our company is now digging more than 100 ponds each year. Our most popular option is a 100′ x 100′ x 15′ deep pond, which is about a quarter-acre in size. For a pond of that size we have to excavate over 2500 cubic yards of dirt. FUN FACT: That is 5 million pounds! That means we move more than 500,000,000 pounds of dirt each year!!!

Our Pond Construction Process:
Site Assessment and Planning
Our process begins with a consultation call where our pond expert will discuss your requirements and provide an over the phone estimate. To proceed further, we arrange a site visit for a fee, which is deducted from the final cost of your pond project.
The site visit is essential to determine a couple of factors:
- Soil Type: Different soil types require different excavation techniques. For example, sandy soils are trickier to dig deep, while clay soils are naturally stable at depths past 10 feet.
- Water Source: Identifying a reliable water source is essential for the sustainability of your pond. We assess nearby water bodies, underground springs, or well systems to ensure a consistent water supply.
- Permits: Each county and township has differing requirements on where you are able to dig a pond. We don’t always need a permit to dig a pond but we always make sure.
- Additional Labor: Such as tree removal, brush clearing etc.
Excavation
After you decide to move forward with us, we will promptly schedule a date to begin excavating your new pond! Our excavation process includes the initial digging, where we meticulously shape and dig the pond to the desired depth. We prioritize safety and strictly adhere to safety protocols to protect our workers and your property during the excavation.
Our excavation process includes:
- Initial Digging: We outline the pond’s shape and start digging, ensuring we reach the desired depth uniformly.
- Material Management: Excavated soil and debris are managed efficiently, with options for repurposing or disposal.
- Safety Measures: Safety is a priority. We implement strict safety protocols to protect our workers and your property during the excavation.

Testimonials
Our clients are our best advocates. Here are some testimonials from satisfied customers:
Theresa S. from Lansing: “Took the deal on Facebook for a 100‘ x 100‘ by 5 ft deep pond. Didn’t know how it was going to come out. Thought it would take 3 months for the pond to fill up in June and it took three weeks. I also had about 5 yards of mason sand sitting in a pile and the bulldozer was able to grade & smooth everything out for the beach. Very happy.“
Paul S. from Saginaw: “These guys are amazing!!! The team was neat, fast, efficient, and respectful to my property. I explained my concerns, and they nailed it 100%. Would recommend every time. Thanks Schlicht Ponds!!“
Jake H. from Grand Rapids: “Great experience all around from Schlicht Ponds on our canal dredging in Kent County. From the early stages where Dave communicated the entire process, even getting back to me after business hours when needed, to the day the work was being done, explaining step by step. Top notch. Same goes for the team members in the office dealing with the entire permit process and also the expertise of the guys in the field running machinery and setting up erosion control measures flawlessly. I highly recommend this company and would certainly use them again!!”
