Can i have a pond on my property?
Yes, you can have a pond on your property. Pond construction involves assessing various factors such as local regulations, available space, and soil conditions. As experienced pond contractors, we evaluate the suitability of your land for pond installation, ensuring it meets all requirements. We also consider the water source, such as groundwater or rainwater, to ensure a sustainable and beautiful pond.
What permits are needed for pond construction, pond repair, or pond/lake dredging?
Permits aren’t always needed when building a new pond or bringing a old one back to life, but always check federal, state, county, and municipal guidelines.
Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) requires a permit for any excavation within 500′ of a regulated waterway such as a lake, river, drain, or creek. A permit is also required if you are digging into 5 acres or more of continuous wetlands.
The following are typical projects regulated under Part 301. Please note: The following is only a partial list of the most common projects associated with inland lakes and streams. Other types of activities may also require permits.
- Shore Protection
- Permanent Docks or Permanent Boat Hoists
- Beach Sanding
- Dredging or Excavation
Typically, determining and pulling the correct permits if needed, is the most time consuming part of the process. Don’t let this information scare you! We have dug, repaired, and dredged hundreds of ponds and lakes in every county in Michigan. We can handle the permitting process or you can call your local offices.
When building a new pond, where does the water come from, and how long does it take to fill?
When building a new pond, the water comes from various sources. Most times in Michigan, groundwater and runoff from rainwater are sufficient to fill the pond. The average size of a pond in the United States is a 1/2 acre, and each contain over a million gallons of water. We have seen ponds fill in as little as 3 weeks and up to 6 months.
If these sources are insufficient, a well can be drilled to supply the necessary water or the pond can be lined. Out of the hundreds of ponds we dig each year 99% of them have no need for either. Our pond guys will assess your property’s specific conditions at the site visit to determine the most reliable and sustainable water source for your pond. This ensures that your pond maintains an optimal water level and remains a healthy, beautiful feature on your property for years to come.
How much does it cost to build a new pond?
There are many variables that go into the cost of building a pond in Michigan. You can expect to pay roughly $0.50 – $1.00 per square foot of surface area for ponds larger than 80′ x 80′. We charge around $8,000 for excavating a 100′ x 100′ x 15′ deep pond, which is approximately a 1/4 acre. That doesn’t include permits, or hauling the dirt off site. To remain cost effective we typically pile dirt on 3 sides of the pond. Hauling the dirt off the property can increase the price for our customers drastically. We excavate 2500 cubic yards of dirt, give or take, for each quarter-acre pond we build or about 5,000,000 pounds of dirt.

In addition to excavation costs, other factors can influence the overall price of pond construction. The type of soil and site accessibility can also affect the cost, as rocky or hard-to-reach areas may require specialized equipment and additional labor.

Where is a good location for my pond?
Consider the proximity to your home and any other structures. A pond close to your house can be a beautiful focal point in your landscape design, offering a peaceful view from your windows or patio. However, make sure it’s positioned where it won’t create issues with flooding or drainage.
Can I put fish in my pond?
It depends on the type of pond. If your pond is connected to other waterways you may need a permit to stock fish. If your pond is a closed ecosystem you are good to go!
How often do i need to clean out my pond?
Typically every 5-10 years you should have your pond cleaned out to keep it in its prime. Of course there are many varying factors that effect that number. Ponds surrounded by trees or that have increased runoff may need to be cleaned more frequently.

Some signs it’s time for your pond to be cleaned out include:
- Decrease in water depth
- It’s giving off unpleasant odors.
- Excessive algae or weeds.
- Not holding water or flooding.
- Murky water.
Do I have to aerate my pond?
Aeration is not always a requirement for every pond, but it can significantly enhance the health and longevity of your pond. It helps prevent the growth of algae, reduces the accumulation of harmful gases, and promotes the overall health of fish and other aquatic life. If your pond is large, deep, or prone to stagnation, aeration can be particularly beneficial in maintaining water quality. If your pond supports fish, experiences significant plant growth, or is located in an area with little natural water movement, aeration may be recommended to keep your pond in optimal condition.
